xp doesn't recognize cd-rw

xp stopped recognizing cd-rw's several weeks ago. It showed i
properties things like size 1.2 mg. no available space. I found
workaround by turning off and then on recording in properties. Othe
burning software works fine so this is definitely an xp problem.
tried sfc /scannow, an xp repair install. deleting the cd driver i
device manager, and deleting the upper and lower filters in th
registry. I did a google and it seems others are having this problem
Any ideas

How about donwloading new firmware for your CD-R/W Drive - it fixed my 2
year old LG DVD R/W's inability to write to 16 speed DVD-R Disks - go to
your manufacturer's website for download & install instructions

This was one of the most intractable(is this a word?) problems I've ever
encountered with windows. Strange as it may seem it seems to be working
now. I did a repair install and nothing happened. I did another repair
install two days later and it started working. Whether this will be
permanent or not I don't know. I'm going to make a Norton save &
restore image of this configuration so if it stops again maybe it can
be restored from the image. I actually only used the cd writing wizard
to make a quicken backup direct to cd. That's how I found out it
stopped working. I changed quicken to back up to the hard drive and
used cdburnerxp pro to copy that file to cd. I know someone who has a
mac and I still prefer windows. Go figure!
