Dear All,
I have a new computer that doesn't like to shut down, instead it crashes
and locks up, even when programs do a re-start when they are being
loaded.
Any ideas how to remedy?

What does crashes and locks up mean? Does it crash, does it lock up or
does it do one sometimes and the other other times? If it crashes are
there any BSODs?

"Crashes and locks up..."

Erm.. I mean that the computer freezes and the mouse and keyboard no
longer work.

With apologies for my incoherence.

No need to apologize, just that it's important to be specific. Have you
done a thorough check for malware in safe mode using a combination of
programs for both viral and non viral nasties?

If it's not malware the clean boot troubleshooting, though tedious,
should sort it out for you.

Thus far its not malaware. I can shutdown OK if I stop one programme in
Task Manager. I shall explore further.

It's one of your many background apps you are running 24/7 that is the
root of the problem. Use msconfig | startup to find the app in question.
