XP doesn't boot... sometimes

My system has been up and running for more than a year now
without any major problems. Now all of a sudden my XP
doesn't boot anymore... sometimes. Once it's up again,
there are no problems but getting it to go there... So
here's the situation:

The PC starts normally, I see the XP logo and when it's
suppose to switch into hi-res mode the screen simply stays
blank, no HD or processor noises inside the machine. A
reset doesn't do the trick but I discovered that turning
the power switch off and on again (which I normally don't
have to use because my system can turn itself off once I
select shutdown) gives me a clean boot.
So I figure the shutdown messes with some of the system
data but then again, it doesn't happen every time...

Suggestions?
Thx!

I agree it's a sign of impending hardware failure and that you should
back up your data immediately. However, after you do that, you might
wanna take your computer to the shop and see if they can diagnose the
problem. A year is too early for a replacement.
