XP desktop to Vista Laptop

I have recently bought an HP Vista laptop and tried to set up a home network
through my wireless router. I have looked on here for days now and have not
found anything that helps.

Now one thing i would like to point out is that i went up to my dads house
and he has 2 XP computers with a wireless router. He hadn't set up his
network up yet so i thought i would give it a try. Of course it worked. I
was able to access the 2 other computers on the network and each computer
could see all 3 computers. (Vista laptop, XP laptop, and XP desktop)

It doesnt make any sense to me at all. Now back at my moms house (Vista
laptop and XP desktop) i have tried doing the same thing, changing the
workgroup name both having WORKGROUP as their names. One thing that i
eventually got working was my vista laptop recognizing the XP desktop, but i
could not access it because it wasnt a valid name. I also found that when i
went to the XP desktop it would not let me access what was in the WORKGROUP
network, it told me that i did not have permission. I then went on to my
moms account, on the XP desktop and tried to access the workgroup folders and
it told me that she did not get permission to access the folder either.

Please give me some help, it really gets me that i can do it at my dads
house and not at my moms house, both having an XP to cooperate with my vista
laptop

Thanks

I would like to setup this network without any software. I have done the
same thing at my dads house, without any software involved. I just want to
do the same at my moms house as i did at my dads house.

Josh and Michael,

I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. In order to level-set where you're
both at, can you please check and ensure the following:
- Ensure every machine is in the same workgroup and same subnet
- Ensure only one firewall is enabled per machine (Start.Control
Panel.Security.Security Center)
- Set Network Category to Home/Work (Private)
- Ensure every user account has a non-empty password
- Create the same user account (with the same password) on all machines
- Ensure password protected sharing is ON
- Use 'Sharing Wizard' to create/manage shares

Please post back with the result.

Thanks

I have been finally able to set up the network on both computers. don't know
exactly what happened to get them both working. But I have to turn off all
firewalls, all intrusion prevention, and all auto protect from Norton 06" to
get it to work. I haven't found which of those settings it is tha keeps it
from working each time. Once I disable them I can use the network and reset
all protection features. I tried setting up each computer in Nortons allowed
area but I still have to disable Norton before I can network. Thanks Michael
