xp desktop and taskbar missing

When I boot up XP I get a blank screen with no desktop or
taskbars...nothing
I can access most of my programs thru the task manager alt-ctrl-del
but unable to get windows explorer to function. Is this virus
related???

I have the same problem. Scanned for virus & adware. Can run through task manager. Tried to use CD to reinstall and says there is a program that has not finished loading, quit and log out, log in and continue....but that does not work. Event log shows that there is a bad block. Ran scanware and think it was repaired, but not sure. Maybe that is where explorer is. How can I reload just explorer? If I can't reinstall/upgrade from the CD I am stuck

When I first got my computer and started it up I was amazed...20 seconds to load. Since then it has been downhill. Slower, slower, crash, crash.....I am tempted to by an Apple machine.

Hi mauipeter,

Try to boot from the recovery console and type this command
chkdsk /R

It will look for damaged sectors and recuperate information. It may
take a while, though.

Type chkdsk /? to see all the possibilities
