Windows XP Service Pack 2 is on my roommate's laptop. Last week, I fixed the
boot.ini file that was deleted on a Sunday with windows recovery console.
This Sunday, the boot.ini file was again deleted.

Is some program in XP deleting this file? If so, I would like to find out
how to disable it.

1. Is the computer completely virus/malware-free? If you think so, what did
you use to determine this (names/versions of programs)?

Be sure:

2. If the machine is clean, you might try:

a. Chkdsk
How to use Chkdsk - http://tinyurl.com/2obcd

b. Test the hard drive's physical health with a utility downloaded from the
drive mftr.'s. You will make bootable media with this utility. Boot with
the cd or floppy you made and do a thorough test. If the hard drive fails
any physical tests, replace it.

See what those troubleshooting steps do for you and if they don't work, post
back with results. I haven't heard of just boot.ini being deleted before,
but there's a good chance that someone else reading this group has.

This will open the Scheduled Tasks folder.

Start | Run | Type: tasks | Click OK

See anything scheduled for Sundays?

Open the SchedLgU.txt and see what you can see.

Start | Run | Type: SchedLgU.txt | Click OK

C:\WINDOWS\SchedLgU.txt

What ran on Sunday?

Delete a Scheduled Task

1. Click Start, click Run, type: tasks and click OK.
2. Click the task that you want to delete.
3. On the File menu, click Delete.
4. Click Yes to delete the task.
