xp deleted itself?

HI, i was having problems with xp yesturday,

when it boots it says its missing <windows root)system32
\hal.dll

ive tried the advice on here to "expand" off my cd, but
it keeps failing.

so ive installed windows for the moment on my other
drive, so i can have a look at my faulty one(and post on
here!!) i cant find the windows folder on my drive that
doesnt boot!

does that mean its deleted itself?

help if possible
