The number of XXXX seen in the password box may not necessarily reflect
the number of characters in the password - as a security measure. This is
normal.

Hi,

Have you tried just leaving it there? WinXP disguises your password length
by adding what appears to be extra characters, this is normal and is by
design. It does not affect the actual password being used.

No, it's not in place of yours. Windows *displays* the full
sixteen bullets even though your password may be shorter. But
it's just the display; it does that so nobody looking over your
shoulder has a head start on guessing your password by knowing
its length.
