XP crashes after a few times

I installed a new hard drive and then installed Windows ME using my system recovery CD's. This was followed by the XP update.

There were a couple of hangups during the XP update, but restarting the computer got past them.

Once everything was installed, I downloaded security patches, etc. If I used the automoatic restart option after each download, the system hung up. I had to restart in safe mode, then shutdown completely, then start again.

It worked okay for a bit if I did this, i.e. shut down each time I had to download something off the net (media players, patches, etc.). Then it finally just hung up.

I tried reinstalling, same result.

I even tried just the ME. Same result.

I've installed a new hard drive before, without any of these problems. Difference was that it was a 40G Western as opposed to a 80G Seagate this time.

Any suggestions?

Just curious...Did you enable a firewall before connecting to the internet?

oops, also, did you get the XP drivers for Video, Audio, etc. Just updating
to XP from ME is not enough.

I meant to say the *Latest* drivers for XP...Not the Drivers on the XP CD,
and certainly not the ones for ME on the recovery CDs... the ones from the
Mfgrs site...I'm talking to myself...sorry...
