i have xp home sp 2. its been fine but began rebooting upon startup.. safe
mode, last known config or normal all did the same.. a flash of blue screen
error, then reboot.
I tried rerunning setup from CD.. Repair did not work, replace windows
install goes for a while, then errors:

"Setup can not set the required windows xp configuration information. This
indicates an internal Setup Error
Contact your system administrator"

Does this indicate hardware or software error or what? Any suggestions??

looks like a hardware failure
be sure to check cpu temp.
also run a RAM test and harddrive diagnostic

Try reboot into Safe Mode.

Perform Anti Virus Scan; run anti-crudware such as Spybot Search and Destroy.

If these identify lots of crud, delete all of it, without any exceptions.

Then boot up normally and see how your system run.

If you get a fatal error again, look at running a hard drive 'CHKDSK' and
then examine the RAM.

cant get that far.. bar.. wont boot at all, in safe or last known...
i was up to date w/spy bot and nav...

I had a similar problem, turned out that one of my RAM modules was screwed.
Been working fine since I replaced it
