Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Does this box only pop up when Internet Explorer or other browser is being
used? Or can you just leave the machine sitting there doing nothing and have
the message pop up? Does the message box have any title to indicate who you
are the "valued customer" of? If it only appears when you are using a
browser, does it only appear at certain pages?

Fortunately, the nasty software you are being prompted to download is being
blocked by some protective software on the way apps, or it's just a piece of
junk, but you want to investigate that actual pop-up to make sure that it
isn't, itself, a malware infestation of your system. Answer the above
questions (all of them and in detail!), and we'll see where to go from
there.

What this means is that there is a fake anti-virus or fake anti-malware app
installed on your system and you need to remove it.

Do NOT, under any circumstances, download the protection software this
"recommends", it is basically an attempt to get your credit card
information.

Instead, use the name that's provided in those download dialogs in a google
search, to identify the removal method.

These can be a little tricky to remove, removal can require several tools
(all of which are free), and in some cases it's helpful to attach the drive
to another system and scan it with real anti-virus software. If you find
you need help, it's not hard to get.

The Google search on the name the dialog provides is the place to start.
Do this from another system, as the malware will probably interfere.

As to restoring or doing a repair install - if the restore leaves behind
your data, it likely won't help. Non-destructive restores and repair
installs leave behind a lot of files and in particular use the existing
registry (which is why you don't have to reinstall apps after a repair
install), so they don't address many problems that are linked through the
registry.

You likely do not need to reinstall, but if you do, be sure that you start
from wiping the drive - remove and recreate the partitions and format them.
If you find your data on the drive afterwards, you did it incorrectly. Of
course, you will be backing your data up before you start thinking about
this approach.

You have ALREADY downloaded a bit of malware. It is this malware that keeps
poping up wanting you to download MORE malware and possibly upload your
credit card info.

After you follow the other recommendations here - and get your machine
cleaned up - install a good anti-virus program and quit visiting those dicey
sites!

If it weren't SO sick, I'd show you another page from this imposter's site.
It's so bad I would get booed royally for even vaguely describing it.

It would make you puke... or laugh hysterically, or both. But it most
certainly would not help convince you that this "Truly Fake MVP" is
a.....a......, no, that's not it....ummmm.... Let's just say this isn't a
"being" you should trust with your computer.

How can you AVOID those dicey sites, since most of them repeat legit
newsgroups and otherwise engineer their sites to be among the first hits on
Google when you try to research a problem? AFAIC, the Usenet has been
hijacked entirely by these sites, and I include ALL such repeater sites with
maybe two exceptions: Microsoft.com and Google Groups. I specifically DO NOT
create any exception for MVPs or anyone else. In the end, the main thing
these sites is to make money from advertising, and it's shameful.

I see these pop-ups all over the place, including on what I would consider
otherwise normal sites. They just buy the advertising space and do their
pop-up thing. Heck, do YOU know what all your various, legitimate
anti-malware apps' alerts look like? I happen to, because I've been mostly
using the same apps for years, and install them on most of my clients'
machines. But if I didn't have that knowledge, I can see how easy it would
be to get sucked in by this scumware.
