XP constantly locking (freezing) up on me!!!

Can someone please help? My computer is running XP and it
constantly locks up on me in the middle of downloads,
virus checks, internet surfing, etc... Any suggestions?

I would think to unplug the computer, open it up and resear all of your
hardware and unplug/plug back in the cables also.
 
If you disable your internet connection, and use various
programs, do you still get the same sort of lockups? From
what you've listed, it would almost appear that everything
is net related, although I'm not sure about "virus
checks". Perhaps you have a piece of spyware or a trojan
that is using up your resources or is causing a conflict
with another program. A good test would be to disable any
programs/services that are running that aren't necessary
and just have what is needed at the time running. Doing so
may give some indication on what's causing the problem.
