XP Conflict with Unicode Characters?

I'm having trouble displaying three Slovene characters in my genealogy
program. The software people there flatly state that this is an XP
problem with the Unicode character set. Is it?

The three characters are the s, the z, and the c with a small v-shaped
carrot over each. Following are these characters in the above order:
Š, the S with a carrot; Ž, the Z with a carrot; and È, the C with a
carrot.

It would be interesting to know if any of you out there displayed the
characters on your computers as they are supposed to appear?

I have installed the Slovene (Slovenian) language on my computer, and
I can compose emails and print documents with these characters with no
problem.

It's interesting. Any thoughts?

thanks,

Mike

This page has some useful info.

http://www.math.utah.edu/~beebe/fonts/unicode.html

My understanding (I'm not an expert) is that....

If an application supports full Unicode it is capable of specifying nearly a
100,000 different characters (because it supports all languages).. However
mappings for these characters need to exist in whichever font you choose if
they are to be displayed correctly. Not all fonts support the all the
characters. I'm not sure it's even practical to implement all 100,000 in the
smaller font sizes and can you really blame the font publishers for not
implementing all 100,000 when most people only use a few 100?

If your genealogy application supports the correct Unicode codes (which
version of the code set?) then the problem maybe with the font you are
using. Try loading a font from the list on the page above in the section
"Fonts for the Unicode character set"

Thanks for the good info, Colin.

Looking at my original text, below, it's interesting that only the
letter C displayed properly with the carrot [È]. This is just the
opposite of what I usually see. It's the S and Z that usually display
correctly.

With such erratic behavior from computer to computer and system to
system, I'm wondering if its even worth while to use these charaters?

This suggests you have a font that can display the characters you need. Now
all you need to do is get your Geneaology program to use it. Out of interest
which program do you use? I have quite a few including FTM, Genbox, PAF and
Legacy 4.

I use The Master Geneaolgist.

To this News Group, I sent the three characters and they displayed
correctly on the monitor before I sent the message. In the comeback
copy, only the È displayed correctly.
Mike

Let me rephrase that. The comeback copy from the server showed all
three correctly. The comeback copy that went through you computer had
only the È correct.

I think this might be because I have Outlook set up so that Tools ->
Options -> Read -> Fonts is set to "Western Alphabet" not "Unicode"

In effect my act of reading and replying converted it.

At least I think that's what happend.

Colin.
