Hello..i have an urgent problem.I have a NT server, which act as a DHCP server
which assigns IP addresses to 2 Windows 98 computers and 2 XP Pro computers.
The five computers join as a workgroup and the NT server share some files to
all computers. However the two XP Pro cannot share the file even cannot see
the server in Neighborhood but the Windows 98 computers can. Also in the NT
server, I can only see the 98 computers but no XP Pro can be found. Can I ask
what's the problem? It's the server problem or XP's?

KTS..
First, make sure you are pulling an IP address on the local network with the
server. Go to START>RUN> type "cmd" in the box and click ok. Then at the DOS
prompt type ipconfig /all and hit enter. Your IP address should be in the
same sub net as your server. (If the server is 10.0.0.1 then your IP address
should be 10.0.0.x). If it is not, then type ipconfig /renew ... if you get
an error that the dhcp server isn't available, then you have other problems.
If you do get a good IP address ....

Make sure your workgroups are the same. XP defaults to workgroup named
MSHOME and Windows 98 defaults to a workgroup named WORKGROUP. If you
already knew all this, and thats not the problem, then we need more info.
Have you joined the domain with the two XP computers?

Hi Scott, thanks for your help. For the first point, all computers are in the
local network( their IPs all are 10.0.0.x of cousr x is differnet among the
computers) Also the DHCP server in NT server can show all the computers
including XPs and 98s.For the second point...yes.I have added the XPs in to
KTS using Home and Small Office Networking Wizard and it still cannot work..I
still cannot map the network drive from the NT server...DO you have any idea?

Ok, what happens when you go to CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM and choose the
"computer name" tab and click the "CHANGE" button near the bottom. This
should allow you to join your XP computer to the KTS domain. You will have to
type the qualified domain name whatever it is (maybe KTS.LOCAL or whatever)
and enter a username and password from your existing NT domain that whas
rights to allow the new computer to join. Usually administrator will work for
this. If you don't know for sure what the domain name is, go to your NT
server to a command prompt and use ipconfig /all to see what domain it is in.

the same error message appears :"cannot connect to Domain : KTS.." when i
click Detail for more information..it said"DNS name do not exist".....

here. Lets use email. send me email at (e-mail address removed) and we
can communicate faster that way.
