XP boot pblms

Upon startup, I get either a blank screen, a safe mode loop, or a screen
saying that my disks need checking. Eventually, I can get the system to boot
through restarting, but sometimes many times are necessary. After the system
boots, a restart will also allow the system to boot normally. If I shut down
and wait more than a few minutes, the problems resurface.

This was originally an upgrade from Windows Me, but I just performed a
re-install of XP and the problems persist. I also believe AOL 9.0 is
responsible for some of the issues.

I'd be happy just to reformat the hard disk and start clean, but when I try
to do that, I am told that the volume is in use, and I can't figure out what
to shut down in order to re-format the drive. Help!!

Thanks....Dave
