My new laptop came with XP home installed. I was able to register it. It is
a valid installation. How do I create a back-up or restore set up CDs if I
have to reinstall because of Hard Drive failure

Consult the User's Guide that came with your new PC.

Making a backup CD might allow you to easily re-install windows on a
new hard drive, but you would lose all of your files. A better way of
making backups is to buy an external hard drive and use it to store
drive images created with a program such as symantec ghost.

generally laptops would have recovery CD or a hidden partition for recovery
....check with your mfr to see what you are dealing with.

these usually reset the system to when it was new (so backup your valuable
data separately!)
