We installed windows XP oner our original windows ME and
want to go back to the ME edition. Restore only goes
back to the XP installation, when I try to run the
windows ME cd, it will not work, I recieved a message
that " Setup cannot run from within Window 2000. Shut
down windows 2000, restart your computer using windows 95
or 98 and then run setup. Otherwise, start MS-DOS, and
then run Setup from the MS-DOS command prompt."
Needless to say, I'm lost! How do I get XP off and ME
back on????!!!!

If you did an upgrade install xp can be unistalled from the add/remove
programs. If you did a clean install of xp, then you will have to format the
drive and install me.
Boot to a win9x floppy boot disk, run Fdisk, delete partitions, create new
partitions, reboot to boot disk again, run format c:, take out floppy and
boot to xp cd, format, install xp. Get boot disk here: www.bootdisk.com

Hi

So long as you didn't use NTFS with the XP install:

Boot your PC with a Win ME EBD, select with 'CD support'. From the A: prompt type "format C:" - without the quotes. After the formatting has finished, put the ME CD into the cd drive and run setup.exe.

"How to Uninstall Windows XP and Revert to a Previous Operating System"

There's a list of conditions that have to be met if you wish to uninstall XP
and revert to ME.

If you can't do the automatic uninstall, then:

If
You installed as an Upgrade, and
Elected to retain the previous system files, and
Have not converted to NTFS

Then there will be an 'Uninstall Windows' in Add/Remove programs, which
will take you back (losing anything installed meanwhile)

Otherwise, you have to boot the ME startup floppy, and either FORMAT C:,
or if you converted to NTFS fist run FDISK (say Y to 'large disk
support?') and delete the NTFS 'non-DOS' partition and make a new 'DOS
Primary' one, then reboot to do the format. Then go to the ME CD and
run Setup.

You will lose everything on disk, so backup all data files first (and
don't use the NTBackup to do it; get a third party program that runs in
both systems)
