Starting two days ago, if my computer is idle for a few minutes,
the login screen will appear and I'll have to select an account
and log in. It used to be that I could leave my computer idle for
days and it would stay in the same account.

How do I get my computer (running XP professional) reverted to its
old behavior?

Make sure the request for a password on resume is not enabled in the
following two places:
Display Properties> Screensavers
Power Options> Standby
