XP assigning bad IP address

steve

I just loaded Norton Internet Security on one of my home
computers. I now have a problem with the IP address on
that machine. Rather than assigning me with
192.168.1.10x as it had been doing in the past, I now
have an IP address of 169.254.x.x.

If I try to run "ipconfig /renew" from a command prompt,
the operation fails. If I try to repair the connection
from within XP, the renew operation fails as well.

I am in contact with Norton but so far to no avail.

Any help out there?

TIA

Yes...I did disable Norton and the I was still unable to renew the IP
address. Let me also mention that while I was installing Norton, I got a
message that updates were available for XP and I downloaded and installed
those. I don't remember exactly what they were but I do know that one of the
updates was a Security issue. Could this be the problem?

Light is on the NIC and when I pull out the cable, I get an error message on
the taskbar the the network connection is unplugged. That tells me that
cables, etc. are all fine.

HELP!!!

Hi,

It appears that Norton Internet Security is blocking DHCP packets. Try
disabling it and if that works, then you just need to find out how to
configure that product to allow DHCP traffic.

Thanks,
