Does XP pro have all of the basic drivers for laptops? I have a Compaq
Presario 1600 XL145 that orginally had win98 on it and I want to put winXP
pro on it. Is it going to run right when I put xp on it or will I have to
search for drivers? TIA

Check the Manufacturer's website. Many vendors will actually note
whether a specific model is XP ready. Also, download the Upgrade
Advisor. It will identify Hardware/Software issues you need to deal
with before actually doing the upgrade. While on the vendor's website
go ahead an download all the XP version drivers for your system.

XP upgrades on notebooks is mostly an issue of Memory & sometimes
a BIOS upgrade to bring it up to ACPI compliancy.

Go to www.crucial.com, enter your model # and see what the max memory
is, and how much it will cost to go there. If you're expectations are
low enough you can run with 96MB by turning off a bunch of gui features.

An 8GB disk is about minimum for XP. You can get some space by
turning on the compression property on C:\ and then doing a defrag
after you've installed XP. (Make your file system NTFS) You can get a
bigger disk on ebay.

If you can borrow an XP CD I think you can run

D:\i386\winnt32 /CHECKUPDATEONLY

(D is your CD drive) and see if there will be any problems. The
CHECKUPDATEONLY is from memory and is probly not correct. Can someone
post the correct command ?

I did the above, once, and it ran very very slowly. Let it run overnight.

In general, I find that for rehabing old equipment, the setup process
runs much much slower than the machine will for the end user, once
it's set up properly. Don't form your opinions
until you're done.

If you borrow an XP CD and you don't care about the data on C you can
always instal and experiment as long as you don't connect to the
internet. You have 30 days.

Very likely not. Some laptops use standard devices: Compaq use probably
more proprietary hardware than anyone, and need customised versions of
systems to go with it. Consult Compaq

I have a Presario 1600 XL145 and have upgraded to XP Pro succesfully.
To make it easier,
1st I added the max Ram memory
2nd I copied my files to my usb Maxtor ext drive,
3rd I put in a new 20g hard drive, formatted and set up as NTFS
and XP Pro loaded on the new blank drive
4th I went to all the sites to be sure to get the latest XP drivers
and runs great on the 1600.
Note: XP Pro will use up most of that hard drive that came with it,
and only 64mg ram is lite.

I totally agree with Alex.....
"Because Compaq uses probably more proprietary hardware than anyone",
I tried to put XP on my Presario 5600 Desktop [450 PII]
1st the compatibility test said no, after many calls to MS and Compaq
both said no and MS gave my a RGA Code to return to store.
2nd I tried to load and would not work after trying several ways
3rd I upgraded ram to 384mg max
4th Saved all my files to the 40g Maxtor
5th I installed another new 20g hard drive as master, original 12g as
slave
6th Formatted original
7th Set up Both as Fat32 and Partioned the 2 HD's
8th XP finally loaded successfully
But
I lost my Firewire and some other programs as there is no drivers
avail
Norton 2000 ste, Partition Magic 6, Roxio Burner, Panasonic 'all in
one' fax printer scanner did not work with XP
You will find some items and program will not run and/or are too old
to work with XP, so you will need to uprade to the newest versions or
newer.

Moral of this story......
Don't take No as the answer

I am using that 1998 5600 to post
Good luck with your 1600, I'm still using it daily,
I also have a Presario 2135 Notebook [thats been in for warranty 3
times],
an old Apple, and an old Stinkpad 310.
But like my 1600 better, it's sturdier and no service calls
I bought it 4 yrs ago on 6/19/2000
