Xp and external drive

I needed to do a complete reinstall of XP, so I backed up
my hd to an external Firewire/USB 2 drive. No problem.
Reinstalled XP. No problem, everything worked as it
should again....except, when I try to restore my files
from the external drive, I get the message that "This
drive is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?"
My laptop, which has the original install of XP gives me
the same message. How am I supposed to restore all my
files????

Sounds like the files never got backed up or the files on the drive have
become corrupt. Depending on how important those files were you may decide
to pay a data recovery software to try to recover the files.
