a simple solution may be using an FTP server if you plan only to
transfer files.

This is more complicated to setup for the novice.

If you wish to transfer files, then a simple way for the inexperienced is to use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

STart off from XP and it will create a disk to run on the 98 PC and all your information will be written to a large file that can be imported to the CP machine

It also copies email files and all passwords amongst other things.

If you can see the computer then you have a lot going for you as far as the
network is concerned.

You should just be able to share the entire C: drive and then copy what you
need to.

If browsing isn't working, then manually make the network connection by
entering in the computer and share name. You can do this from either the
Windows Explorer or a CMD prompt.

For a cmd prompt it would be something like "net use x: \\server\share" - no
quotes
Where X: is the drive letter you want to map
Server is the name of the Win9x computer
Share is the share name you gave it.
