XP activation?

PC about 2 1/2 years old all of a sudden brings up an activate Windows at
start up.
This PC is very little used and not at present internet connected, in fact I
was trying to get a wireless adapter working when this came up after a power
down then power up.
Anyway rang the number, went through the steps for changing the key to that
printed on the COA sticker, click Update and it takes me straight back to
the activation screen.
Have double checked I'm using correct number, only thing I can think of is
that I may have applied SP2 or SP3 since it was bought.
Why is it bringing this up after so long and what can I do about it when it
won't let me update the key?
Using XP Home.
