I have a boxed version of XP Pro. What happens after MS decides to stop
supporting XP? Will we still be able to activate it after a reinstall, or
will it be effectively dead?

Windows XP will continue to be supported by Microsoft for a number of
years. They have tentatively scheduled Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
for release in the first half of 2008 and support will be provided for
at least 3 or 4 years after that date.

Microsoft also makes the following committment at
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_faq.mspx

"Microsoft will also support the activation of Windows XP throughout
its life and will likely provide an update that turns activation off
at the end of the product's lifecycle so users would no longer be
required to activate the product."
