I have two xp machines and neither can connect to a win 98 printer. Filesharing with xp -> 98 works fine. 98 -> 98 printer works fine. It's just the xp -> 98 printer that can't connect. If I create a local printer on the xp machines and redirect lpt2 to the 98 shared printer, that also works fine. When I try to connect to the printer share with the add new printer wizard it gives an error that it can't connect to the computer
I didn't have much time to troubleshoot, but I've tried reinstalling printer sharing and creating a second printer share among some other minor stuff. Netbios over tcp/ip is functioning. The machines are using wins for name resolution which I haven't looked at, but seems to be functioning fine
One other noteable item is no matter who I log on as, I can't alter printer ports on the xp machines. It's like there's some policy denying access, but the server is nt4, which doesn't support any kind of xp policies and one xp machine doesn't even log in to it, so unless there's a local security policy by default then there isn't one being applied
How can I connect xp to a 98 printer?
