XP 2nd channel IDE shows IRQ conflict

A friend has a Dell with win XP pro installed and her DVD drive stopped
working. One of her kids friends was using the PC and she suspects he may
have deleted something.
Second channel IDE shows the yellow circle with exclamation which is a
resource conflict.
I did a restore but it was well after it happened. System info shows the
second channel IDE on IRQ 15 and working.
I used to know how to get into resources in win 95 and reassign resources
but this feature doesn't show up in XP and I assume it is not needed as XP
does the P&P.
Does this sound like a hardware problem or possibly a software problem?
There is a lot of music on it and reinstall would be the last resort.
I tried another DVD and cable and that is not the problem.
Any suggestions or possibly a registry edit check as I am familiar with
using regedit.

Have you made any changes to the BIOS setup ? Some BIOS
have control of a feature called APIC -"Advanced Programmable
Interface Controller". This basically extends the IRQ range up to
23. If you've disabled the APIC then the Secondary IDE may
not be able to acquire/use IRQ #15 and that's why the device is
not enabled. You should use the System Information applet to
view the IRQ mapping on your PC. (MSInfo32.Exe, expand the
Hardware resources category and then the IRQ sub-category.
Note the highest # IRQ. ( 15 or 23 ).

I will check that today or tomorrow. Thanks

I checked BIOS and didn't find that listed. Guess it is time to reinstall XP
and see if that fixes problem.
Thanks for the responses.

Just curious how you went from "resource conflict" to IRQ conflict noted in
the subject line?

That was a misstatement as I have seen more resource conflicts that are IRQ
related than any other.
I haven't resolved the problem as she hasn't saved the MP3's on the PC.
I intend to try reinstalling windows and if that doesn't work it most likely
is a hardware problem.

Sometimes the conflicts can be cause by a missing driver. Since this
is IDE, you may need to update / install the IDE drivers, which are
normally part of the motherboard chipset drivers.
