XP\2000 home network

Help!!!!
I have a home network throught a Linksys router. 3 PC's,
one XP Pro and two 2000's.
The 2000's see each others and can share without a
problem; However the XP can not see the other 2 PC's.
Every time I click on "My Network Places" to View
my "Workgroup", I get the error " 'Workgroupname' is not
accessible. You must not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access Permissions."

Facts: If I ping the other two pc's by IP, I get a
response. But if I do it by name, I don't.
If I search for computers by IP, I could see the other 2
PC's and can share; I like to get the Naming resolved.
Any help is appreciated. I spent numerous hours on this.

I don't have zone alarm. I do have sharing turned on. I
do have TCPIP\Net Bios. The XP is on a Laptop with built
in Wireless (turned off.) the other 2000 PC's are on
desktops.

Andy,

Make sure the browser service is running on the laptop. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started.

Check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View -
Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has a non-blank password. If "Classic", setup and use a
common account with identical password on all computers.

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck:
I tried all the above and still no cigar.
I can hit the internet from all 3 PC's without a problem.
Any other suggestions?

Andy,

You've obviously done a lot of research before posting here. And you've
answered a lot of the usual questions. So if you have a problem, we have to
look for more questions.

Your problem (unreliable browser service) is usually caused by a misbehaving
firewall. Do you have (or have you had) any firewall in the past (not just ZA)?
ICF? On any of the computers?

What model Linksys are you using?

What error do you get when pinging by name? Can you access / ping the XP
computer from either of the 2K computers, by name or ip address?

Here's the official support from M$:

Please extract and post ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Chuck : Read answers after your questions, thanks
Do you have (or have you had) any firewall in the past
(not just ZA)?>ICF? On any of the computers? "No
Firewalls at all."
I have Linksys 4 port etherfast cable/DSL and Voice
Router.
The error I get when pinging by name: "Ping request could
not find host'computer name'. Please check the name and
try again.
Can the XP computer see itself, and its shares, on the
network? "YES" By name as well
as by ip address? "YES"
I can ping XP PC from any 2000 PC by IP but not by name
and Vice versa.
I can ping 2000 to 2000 by IP and Name

Today I hooked one of the 2000 to the XP by a cross over
cable to eleminate the router and gave each an IP and same
Sub ,still same results.

You are right , there must be a browser service problem.
How do I update or replace that?

Yahooooooooooo....
I got the answer to my problem. Thanks for Steve Winograd.
I found this from him answering someone elses problem..
I must have spent twoo full weeks on this problem.

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type"
at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which
should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It
means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on
a peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.
