In the scoring dialog (Article | Add to score file) there are radio
buttons at the bottom for 'kill entire thread' and 'kill from here
down'. The latter will kill the current post and any descendents of
it.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I tried that button, and found that
it only killed the messages in the thread that were shown in the window.
IOW, if there were more messages in that thread the next day, it wouldn't
kill those.
However, perhaps I wasn't paying close enough attention. I shall try
again.

The posts visible at the time should immediately be marked with a -9999
score, but they won't disappear. If more headers are downloaded, any
in that thread should not appear at all.
(If a thread becomes very long, some clients will drop message-ids from
the References header; this can result in a killed thread popping back
into view.)
