Xmas buying help needed Canon printer

Hello group,

I'm in the market for a Canon printer. I've looked at the models available
and they all look good to me. I am very interested in a model with an LCD
display. I was wondering how reliable those are and how accurately you can
preview what you are going to print? Another factor I'm looking for is
multi-function. I'd like the printer to have a scanner for the, you never
know when you're going to need it, practicallity. I own a Canon I860 and it
takes quite a while to start. I'm looking for one that powers on at least a
second earlier. There will be a Canon digital camera involved but I think
I'm going to buy a portable picture printer for that. Any first-hand advice
or any tips would be great. Thank you.

Why do you want one with an LCD display. That is used for printing
without a computer and may result in prints that are not as good from a
photographic point of view (not edited in photoshop etc) and printing
most of the prints instead of the real good ones is more espensive.

They work pretty good, I have had 6600d for about 3 weeks now.
You can select, crop and do some limited editing without firing up
the computer.
For more serious work then using a good photo is advisable.
The LCD will also let you do some maintainence type work
on the printer.

LCD displays on a printer is only used as a guide, I think this stem
for people who use their printer for direct printing from a camera
just to let you know the printers getting the data from the camera
plus a selling gimmick

Lets face it what serious work can you do on a 2" screen

There is a 68 page Direct Printing Guide that comes with 6600d
printer. Nowhere near as sophisticated as computer photo software,
but does include quite a lot of functions including cropping,
contrast, brightness, red-eye,contours, jaggies, noise reduction,
sizing, color hue, sepia etc.
All useful if you want to print out a bunch of 'snapshots'
without having to fire up the computer.

This is a waste of time and a waste of money.

I use the 2" screen on my Photosmart printer to zoom and crop for printing
directly from camera cards. It is very useful here, I like it much better than
the version I had without the LCD.

I do that on my camera, FWIW.

So it seems there is some disagreement about the LCD screen. I was under the
assumption, (I suppose in part to marketing) that the LCD screen had some
functionality for printing from the PC. I do see how it can be a gimmick to
some. Would it be advisable then, to buy a portable printer with an LCD
screen? Also, I haven't heard much mention of the warmup speed of Canon
printers. Also, are there any other models other than the 6600d that have
been tried out? I've just recently become interested in the scanner part of
the multifunction printers. Are they decent for documents and low-grade
pictures? I will be wanting to print high-to-middle grade pictures from my
desktop printer as well as the portable printer. Any recommendations on
portable printer? Santa's getting tired already. Thanks again.

As there always is. The ip6600D doesn't cost much more than the ip5200
so cost is not the issue. I wouldn't find the feature all that handy
but I find card slots most handy esp ones that I can place anywhere I
want without them falling behind the desk. But that feature you can
get in other ways so no big deal.

The big reason IMHO to choose one over the other is if you print text.
The ip5200 like the ip4200 is going to use pigmented ink, great for
plain paper. The surface area it prints text is larger than the
color... so it's less work per page. And the pigmented black ink is
cheaper per page than color.

If your main application is photo prints... do consider the ip6600D but
best to take in your digital camera with your own paper and print
before you buy. Most shops are hip to this if you leave the prints
there esp if it means you buying a printer. Do expect higher costs per
page this way.

Most of us have not seen the new models. I went out of my way to look
at some in the store but haven't even met the ip6600D yet. I can speak
for the mp760. The screen's fuction is pretty limited to printing from
solid state memory cards though it's somewhat handy getting full blown
error messages rather than blinking lights.
Also, I haven't heard much mention of the warmup speed of Canon
printers.

I can't speak for them. To be honest I tend not to notice as I leave
my printer on... and my last printer was a old school laser which took
a fair amount of time to warm up.

I've just recently become interested in the scanner part of
the multifunction printers.

Keep in mind that these are the thoughts from a pretty happy owner....
I find the canon multifuctionals rather limited in the software
department. With HPs you get good fax support where canon only has one
multi-fuctional inkjet with fax on board and even that is limited from
my understanding. You can fax paper, you can fax from the pc but most
users I've talked to can't get a fax to their PC... it goes to paper.
With the epsons for example i've heard you can scan to flash memory
without the PC. With the canon this is possible so long as the PC is
on. So the other guys have some spiffy features worth looking at. I
find the canon's compliment of software to be rather minimal... which
is perfectly fine by me. One annoying aspect is you can't directly
scan and print to something else. The springboard application... or
the complex scanning software... is geard tward that unit alone and
doesn't permit printing to anything else. Selecting print multiable
copies brings up EZ photo print which prints to any canon printer but
only canon printers. This is odd as it takes more work to make
software print to only one brand then it is to make software print to
anything.

You have your simple scan software which does nothing more than allow
you to crop, correct colors, and save as a file.

The big feature on canons... and for me the selling point is printing
onto CDs. The feature isn't enabled on north american models but
canonUSA is now selling the tray and enabling the feature is easy.
With epson this is only an option on printers and one of their more
spendy multi-fuctionals.

NOT A REAL GOOD IDEA FOR MOST
