XL97 error "cannot use object linking and embedding"

Excel 97 SR-2

I have a user who consistently receives two errors when
launching Excel 98 SR-2. The first: "cannot use object
linking and embedding." The second: "An error occurred
initializing the VBA libraries (14)"

Neither of the errors appear to be causing functionality
issues at the moment. He first noticed the problem after
successfully cleaning a virus off the machine, but does
not remember the virus name.
