XL2007: Is each file now a separate process??

In XL2003, I would click the X in the upper right corner and all Excel
files would close. Now in XL2007, I must close each one
individually. So does that mean that in XL2007, each file opens in a
separate process like Word does?

So does that mean that in XL2007

I don't think so. It just means, imo, that you have the option to show
windows in taskbar on and MS changed how that behaves a bit.
