when opening an existing XL spreadsheet I receive a
message "A document with the name ????? is already open,
you cannot open two documents with the same name ---"
When I then click on OK, that message disappears and
everything is then OK. How can I stop this annoyance?

Don,

You probably are trying to open two spreadsheets with the same filename
twice.
This might be two similary named files in different directories. I believe
it cannot
be opening the exact same file twice, because the message would be
different...
If you really need those two files with the same name opened at the same
time,
you should either open one of the files in a different session of Excel, or
you
should rename (one of) the files, so that the filenames are not equal
anymore...

Kind regards,
