xfering xp software to new Vista machine

Hello

I have several programs that I need to transfer from my old XP machine to my new
Vista machine.

I copied one over and used the compatibility feature, but I continue to get an
error message. Vista also emptied all of my settings, but, that isn't
important, I can always reset them.

The error message I get is:
Unable to load DMOD.ini, there is a permission problem.

I've spent three days now trying to find a fix. I'm not even close to a
solution. If I can't run this rinky dink program, I will have to return my new
computer.

The programmer is no longer available, so he can't help me out.

TIA,
Nancy

Most software programs require an installation package, do you have that for
the software you are transferring?

Unfortunately the only person who could possibly solve this problem would be
the developer of the software in question. It's probably as simple as
moving the INI file to a different location but there's no way for us to
know. Sorry.

I have a zip file or I can download it from the site, if It's still there. Will
that work?

I just want to double check my options, in that case.

1. I can take the computer back
2. I can somehow (I'm not knowledgeable in this, but hopefully DH can do it or
kid) partition the hard drive. Run XP on one and run Vista on the other.
3. I can dump Vista on the new machine and just use XP. (again will need Kid,
if he's even up on Vista).

Am I correct? Are there other options I can consider?

BTW, this really sucks. I must use this program until I can get help from the
new group news.admin.moderation.

TIA,
Nancy

I don't know, I think I misunderstood the phrases "transfer from my old XP
machine" and "copy over". I was led to believe that you were not actually
INSTALLING the software properly. What is the software?

When I said "xfer" I meant a general moving from one machine to the other.

When I said "copy" I meant literally copying the files from the old computer to
CD/usb drive/name your medium and then to the new computer.

The software I'm talking about is called DMOD.
http://www.netwinsite.com/dfree/dmod.htm

It's a very small program used to moderate newsgroups and mailing lists. It's
free, which is why we use it.

The programmer did it on his own time, with the permission of his company. He
got a better job and is no longer able to support it.

OH MY GOSH! My husband (DH) figured it out. He's so smart. :)

On the dmod.exe, right click on properties | go to compatibility | run the
program for WIN 2000 | go to dmod.ini properties | remove "read only" | click on
advanced | remove "file is ready for archiving" | apply the changes. Now I can
notify my other moderators. :)

It all works! And it works SO much better than before!

Thank you all, you have been very kind.

Super, thanks for passing on how you got it to work, that may come in handy.
DH is a smart cookie!
