I'd try setting the parallel port as "Normal", reboot your pc, press Del (or
F2) key when the advice "press <del> to enter setup" appears, go into
advanced peripherals configuration, choose parallel port and set it as
"Normal" or "Spp", save changes and reboot.

If it doesn't work you should try the printer on a different pc to be sure
there isn't an hardware failure.

Thanks for the reply - I don't have a parallel port (new Dell notebook with 3
USB ports, which is why I got the cable adapter). The printer works on
another computer.

Did you install the driver software before you plugged in the USB
converter cable? Your computer has to see a virtual parallel port
before you can install the printer using a parallel port.

I installed the printer driver with the cable adapter plugged into both the
printer and computer with the printer turned on (per xerox instructions).

I am talking about the driver for the USB to parallel port adapter.
It is installed independently of the printer. It has to be working
before you can install the printer.
