x700 vs x800

I have an older P 1.7GHZ computer with AGP 4x. Is it worth the money to get
the x800 instead of the x700? I'm guessing that the only benefit of the 800
would be seen on an AGP 8x system.

Thanks!!

I think that the X800 will still kick a lot of bottom even with AGP
4x.

But is the performance difference on 4x worth the price difference? With
regards to the NVIDIA card, I was told that there was not much noticeable
difference between their 7800agp and 6600agp on a 4x system and NOT to spend
the extra on the 7800.

Thanks!

You were told BS. Even today AGP4x is in no way a bottleneck...

I think who ever told you that was full of it. I read a
review, sorry, but can't remember the source, where they only had an
Athlon XP system (however it was AGP 8x) to test the card with as the
other test systems had been upgraded to PCI-E. The card left the
6600GT in the dust. It beat out the 6800Ultra, and considering there
is no real world difference between AGP 4x, & 8x, it would perform
just a fast. The only thing to consider is how slow your slow CPU is.
You won't get the same scores that the 7800GS got on higher end3
systems, but it would still beat out a 6600GT by alot.

I was told that by a CSR at Leadtek regarding their own cards.

It makes no difference which manufacturer made the card. AGP 4x is not a
bottleneck, even not for the latest and greatest games. The CSR told you
nonsense.

I would think with your cpu a X800 would be overkill.
Get a X700 for now.

Where can you get a true X700 Pro AGP for under a $150.00. I
did a search, and pulled up some X700 AGP non-pros for around $101.00,
but they where being offered by very unreputable retailers. Even
Newegg (very reputable) has the non-pro for no less than $119.00 +
S&H. That's only $10.00 less than the 6600GT which would walk all over
the X700 Pro, much less the X700 non-Pro.

Like the other folks said, 4x is not the bottleneck. Yr P4 1.7 might be,
though!

I paid $100 (including shipping) for a used X700 Pro 256MB AGP, off EBay.
It should arrive by Friday.

Have you considered the Sapphire x1600 Pro AGP? It can be purchased
here for $165:

Additionally, it has a Dual-Link DVI which supports 2560x1600
resolution. This way, you'll be ready when that 30" Dell
3007WFP falls from the sky on to your desktop.

<looking up> Hey! I don't want a hole in my ceiling!!

I have a Pentium 1.7 GHz machine with 512mg ram with a CRT monitor. Don't
think I can make full use out of the card with my configuration, and when I
do get a new computer, er, when my wife lets me get a new computer I'm gonna
get the best card on the market at that time, so I don't want to spend TOO
much on a card now.

The x700 is a 9800pro-like card, which will be held back significantly by
your cpu, I don't think it's worth paying extra for faster card in that
system
