X-axis scale

When making a line chart my Excel 97 automatically makes
the x-axis a category axis. How can I make it a value axis?

Instead of a line chart, create an XY (scatter) chart, and use one of
the line subtypes.

I am constructing a bar chart and would like to be able to
change my x-axis to a value axis.
Unfortunately for what I am doing I have to use a bar
chart but need times along the x-axis. Is there anyway to
do this?

Ruth -

The X axis of a bar chart (the vertical axis of a chart having
horizontally oriented rectangles) can only be category or date, not
value or time. If you mean the horizontal axis of a horizontally
oriented chart, that's the Y axis, and you can use times. Double click
the axis, on the number tab, pick the desired number format, and on the
scale tab, enter values as times in H:MM or H:MM:SS formats (you must
include hours).
