X.500 OID Selection

I am trying to figure out a procedure for knowing what X.500 OID to assign to
a new attribute for the user class.

The user class X.500 OID is 1.2.840.11.3556.1.5.9

If I am to choose the next increment, how do I know what attribute has the
last incrementes OID for this class?

Answering my own question.

You need to use the OID gen tool included with the Windows 2000 RK.

Kudos for excellent netiquette.

Space Junk,

Thank you for posting the answer to your own question. oidgen is indeed the
proper tool to use. That is, unless you have about $4,000 to get your own.
Probably not necessary. I think that you can also e-mail Microsoft and they
will provide one for you. Not sure what that exactly means, though.

As I am sure that you already know, you should run this utility only once.
It will give you two different numbers: one for any classes that you might
create and one for any attributes that you might create. It is very very
very important to keep these straight. And very well documented.

And, if I might ask - what are you doing with these? Are you trying to
create some additional attributes that will show up in the ADUC ( such as
Social Security Number or Gender or some other attribute )? The reason that
I ask is that extending the Schema is really easy. Creating that new class
or that new attribute is not that difficult ( and by figuring out that you
need an Object ID - aka OID - you have figured out the hard part here ).
However, getting that new attribute to show up in the ADUC is another story.
That would probably be worth a call to MS PSS.

HTH,

Cary
