wupdater/ updater error message

I am running xp pro
since yesterday every time i try to log off or turn off the
computer I get an error message that states:

"wupdater.exe program failed to respond"

I have to choose "end now" or end the process at the task
manager level in order to log/turn of the computer

How do I fix this?

You'd be better off asking this in the general XP group, this group is for
xp embedded, which is a whole different kettle of fish.
