In my work I mostly use Times and Ariel but there are also many fonts on my
PC that need to remain so that stuff created by others is correctly
rendered. This means that, if I want to change from TNR to Ariel (for
example in my word processor), I have to scroll through most of the other
fonts, which is a PITA.
Is there a utility that will filter the fonts shown in the listbox so that
this otherwise trivial task can be speeded up?

Try clicking in the box where the names of the fonts are, then typing
the first few letters of the font you'd like. That should make it a lot
quicker when trying to select!

That's a neat trick, and a new one to me.

What an excellent suggestion! Hadn't occurred to me - thanks. :-)
