Wrong unit of measure on the ruler line

Word 2003
The unit of measure is set to centimeters in Tools, Alternatives, General. Still the UoM shows another value, ch on the ruler line
Likewise, standard tab stops are set to 3,79 ch. How can I change the format for Unit of Measure back to centimeters
