Wrong servername in "List Obtained from"...

Martin Halberg

Dear all,

I'm working in a single domain having 8 sites. Each site
have there own DC. Lately when preparing new DC servers in
new sites I'm experiencing that the new DC servers is
obtaining the Group Policy list from the PDC and not from
it self. The problem is that my client are polling the
policies from other sites resulting in bad performance as
my sites are connected by VPN lines. All DC's are Global
Catalog servers.

Any help is appreciated.

Kind Regards

Martin,

This would be correct behavior. The DC that holds the role of the PDC
Emulator is the correct DC.

Hmm, are you sure about that? All our DC's in each site of
ours points to themselfs when you take a look at the "list
obtainded from: <local DC server>" field/area. I have 8
sites working that way with no problems.

But! The two latest servers that I've created and placed
in new sites is now starting to point to the PDC in our
primary foreing site. How come the new site/server does
not behave the same way as our old servers? I find that
very strange. :)

When you click the Group Policy tab the list takes very
long time to list because it's talking with the PDC far,
far away in a foreign site. Should it not fetch the GP
list from itself?

Thanks so far.

Err, looks like I am not so sure after all. I was thinking of something
else because the PDC Emulator role is very important in GPOs. All Group
Policies are initially, by default, written to the DC that holds the role of
PDC Emulator. This can be changed, of course. But, I am sure that you knew
that....

Upon your reply question, I looked into this a bit more. I ran GPRESULT on
a couple of DCs ( in the only Site ) and the "applied from ...." in each
case was itself. I was simply looking at the Default Domain Policy.

Are these two DCs super new? Has there been time for InterSite AD
Replication to take place already? Have you verified that it has ( either
with repadmin or replmon )?

Sorry for the misinformation.

HTH,

Cary
