I'm using Internet Explorer 6 with Windows 98. When I click on an
underlined name, it should bring up the compose window of Netscape 7.1,
but instead it uses my old Netscape 4.7. In the Windows control panel
internet options, I have 7.1 specified as my mail program. How can I
tell IE to use 7.1 and not 4.7?
Thanks.

Try going into IE's menu - Tools | Internet Options...; then select
the Programs tab. Under the e-mail drop list, see whether there are
two entries for Netscape, the older and newer versions, and select the
newer version.

Otherwise, you may have some stuff left over in the registry that
needs to be edited. This is not for the faint of heart...

Good luck.

There are three options - Netscape 7.1, Outlook Express, and Hotmail. NS
7.1 is selected. I'm not really into editing the registry.
Also, for Newsgroups, it says Outlook Express, even though I'm using NS
7.1. It won't let me change it.

I don't know what else to suggest that would make sense. Sometimes I
find that when I can't select a desired option, it helps for me to
select a different option and use it, close out, and then go back
(restart IE or whatever program) and select the desired option. I
think this just might allow IE to know that there's a new version of
Netscape. For that matter, does it even *allow* you to pick something
besides Netscape?

Also, when you upgraded, did you uninstall Netscape 4.7? maybe you
could uninstall NS7, uninstall NS 4.7 (if necessary), remove whatever
folders they created, and reinstall NS7 again.

Beyond that, I just don't know - and like you, I'm not into editing my
registry. I lost a whole computer doing that (had to reformat &
reinstall the OS and everything). I hate when that happens...
