i have windows xp professional. the computer has the
wrong day and date and i can't change it. the time stays
correct but the day and year are on february 20, 2036.
when i change it to the correct day and year and then hit
apply, it goes back to february 20, 2036.
this is causeing a problem with programs that i have that
were going to expire in a year, such as norton anti
virus. it's making my programs expire.

HELP

Restart the machine with the delete key held down. Sometimes you have to
keep tapping away on the delete key during the initial start up (eg keep
tapping on Delete until you see the BIOS screen come up instead of Windows
login)

It may be the delete key, but it can also be, depending on
hardware/firmware F1, F2, F10, esc or maybe some
combination.

Check your manuals for your computer.

My Intel mobo uses F2, an ASUS mobo in a HP we have uses F1
and a friends Compaq uses F10. Our old 286 used ctrl/esc.

No, what key you use to get into the BIOS is not necessarily the
delete key. It depends on what motherboard/BIOS you have.
Although the delete key is probably the most common, it is far
from universal.

Fix the date and time in the computer's BIOS.

I very much doubt if it is that - Windows only reads the BIOS clock at
boot in order to set up the time. When you change the time in date/time
and apply, it *writes* to the CMOS memory. It *might* be that this is
failing, but I don't think that would put the windows clock back.

Two possibilities: Is the machine joined to a network domain - if so the
time is being set at the domain controller - complain to the
administrator.

Or something is wrong with the time service. THat would probably be put
right by this sequence of commands - give them a try:

Start->Run cmd.exe
and to its prompt give
net stop w32time
w32tm.exe /unregister
w32tm.exe /register
net start w32time
exit

You may have a problem with the system BIOS. You need to
enter "system setup" during POST. Check with the systems
manual. May be the del key depending on the bios. see if the
'PnP OS installed' switch is on. If not use the keys
mentioned on the screen to access the function and change
from off to on (or no to yes). Then save changes and exit.
System will reboot.
Windows will start after and attempt to change the date on
your clock. Double check to make sure the proper date/time
is displayed in dialog. Also change the user type in admin
tools/computer manager to administrator. Its in users and
groups in computer management. Look for an entry with your
name on it and open it by Double clicking on it, then type
your name in the first field and administrator in the
second, apply and ok. Close all items and restart.
