Wrong date & time on startup and other problems

On startup today date and time were 28th October 2002 00:00hrs.
Restore is not working. I attempted to restore to yesterday's date, when all
was OK, but restore was incomplete.
Every shortcut on desktop led to just one website shortcut - now deleted.
I can access internet and OE but everything freezes when I click on start.
I have run virus and spyware - no problems.
I have AVG, spybot, Defender and ZoneAlarm.
Would be grateful for any ideas on what the problem could be and how I can
fix it.
Many thanks

Sounds like you picked up a virus that AVG does not detect. Are your AV
definitions current? Do you use AOL Instant Messaging? There's a nasty one
going through AIM...

Try booting from your XP installation CD and doing a Repair installation. Then
run your AV and anti-spy apps again.

Hi Jerry
I though about it for about 2 seconds but as I have not had problems on this
PC could not remember how to do it so left well alone.
I did a time synch and all is well at the moment even after numerous restarts.

I ran 2 other antivirus scans but they found nothing.
I do not use Aol
I have the recovery disc in front of me but was hesitating - will that not
delete everything on my hard drive? I have not backed up for awhile (hangs
head in shame) and must not lose my CV!
Is there an option to just do a repair installation when using the CD?
Presumably I startup with CD installed and press F8? As I said, long time
since I had to do this sort of thing.
Many thanks

Depends...

An actual Windows installation CD will not delete everything during a Repair
installation.

However, a vendor's "recovery CD" that contains a disk image with Windows + all
the vendor's proprietary stuff may well reformat the HD. Many/most will delete
at least everything on your C: drive (a good reason to partition the HD and put
data on a separate logical drive); you will have to look at your docs and the
menu on your CD.

If you can get the computer restarted, BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA NOW!

See above.

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD before Hard Drive. Insert the CD and
restart the machine. Check the menu before hitting any more keys.

Hi - I am able to backup so am doing that at the moment. Have run sfc
/scannow and it is asking for xp cd. xp was preinstalled so will have to use
recovery disk which I have had a look at and there does not appear to be a
repair option. Am going to try copying the 1386 folder to c drive and see if
that works. However, will get some shut eye first! Many thanks for support.
