I'm in awe that it took this long for someone to suggest OpenOffice in
opposition to WordPad for a free alternative. *grin*

Actually it was suggested an hour before Ken suggested it.

Do you mean you just want a simple text editor? If so, you do not have to
purchase Microsoft Office because it would be a waste of money because you
will not be using its other applications, besides Microsoft Word. There are
alternatives out there that can do this task. One good example would be
OpenOffice. It is basically like Microsoft Office, meaning that it has
applications that mimics Microsoft Office. It has a text edition like Word,
presentation creator like PowerPoint etc. Give it a shot. Here is the
website to its homepage:

Hello all!!!
I'm trying to master how I can write letters through the use of my
pc. I don't mean email, letters that I send through the good old
fashion way,the post, and then I can print them. Would I need the XP
Office Edition? Thanks!!!

Actually it was suggested an hour before Ken suggested it.

I too am an aficionado of WordPerfect from way back when it was the
WordPerfect Corp

Not when it was put out by Satellite Software International?

and DOS version.

Me too. I started with WordPerfect 4.1 in 1987 (after the SSI days for me
too--they changed their name to WordPerfect Corporation in 1986).

Currently using version 12. Works
wonderfully and you can't beat Reveal Codes.

Then you may be interested to know, if you don't already, that the new
version, X3, was just released.

Yes actually I had forgot about SSI...I actually started with that
version. I don't remember the version number. A friend of mine
purchased it then didn't want it so he transferred ownership over. I
license number was really low..lol

I just got version 12 about 6-8 months ago and since it's very stable
I'm not so inclined to upgrade yet again. In fact I got 12 right after
it was first released so I was very surprised to see X3 come out so soon.

4. OpenOffice is a freeware Office suite that does much (but not all) of
what Microsoft does.

I think you'll find that for the normal user there is absolutely no
difference between the latest Open Office version 2 and Office XP - with
the exception of Outlook.

Are you disagreeing with me? Does it not do much of what Microsoft Office
does? Does it do all of what Microsoft Office does?

It does all that MS Office does (with one or to exceptions that the average
user wouldn't even know about) plus extras like built-in export to pdf.
