I have Windows XP SP2... all updates. When in windows explorer there is no
dialog to send files to a folder to be written to a CD, and no dialog to
write a file to a CD... I can use a software program to do this. Not sure
what happened to the native feature.

Perhaps it's been turned off. Open My Computer, right-click on the CD
drive, choose Properties, then Recording, then check hte Enable Recording
box.

I don't have a tab "Recording" under the CD-R properties dialog. Maybe my
recording software (Ahead NERO) modified the OS too turn off native writing

The problem may also be with your packet-writing software. Packet-writing
software uses a special algorithm to write your files to compact discs
whenever you insert a blank disc. Although Windows XP already has the CD
Burning tool (packet-writing software) built in, your disc-burning software
may have installed its own packet writing program. If you use Ahead Nero 6
Ultra Edition, your packet-writing program is InCD 4. If you use Roxio Easy
Media Creator 7.5, your packet-writing software is Drag-to-Disc. First,
please disable your packet-writing software. [Roxio puts an icon in the
system tray, and InCD is accessible from Ahead Nero StartSmart]. Then, try
enabling the CD burning on the drive as Patrick suggested. If that does not
work, you can also try to disable the CD burning on the drive, and use your
packet-writing software to create discs. (If you have the Ahead Nero suite,
you may need to download InCD from http://www.ahead.de). I hope that these
suggestions will help you solve your problem.

Best regards,
Kit

Yes, this is correct. Nero disables XP's built-in writing ability to prevent
system errors. Use the Nero software (better than XP's) or, if you don't
like it, uninstall Nero.

Thanks guys... I will just use Nero

Nero disables the Enable CD Recording on this drive, but does not remove the
Recording tab, that is another problem.

CD Recording tab missing

See both of these MSKB articles.

Optical Disc in Windows XP

Open My Computer | Right click the CD drive | Properties |
You should see a recording tab

If you right click My Computer | Manage | Disk Management |
Right click the CD drive | Properties | You will not see a recording tab

Check these registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
and/or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Network

Value Name: NoCDBurning
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Enable Burning
1 = Disable Burning

If the Value NoCDBurning does not exist under any of the above keys, that is
the same as Enable Burning.

If XP Pro, Group Policy:

Remove CD Burning features

Set to Disabled or Not Configured.

Remove CD Burning features explanation:
[[Windows Explorer allows you to create and modify re-writable CDs if you
have a CD writer connected to your PC.

If you enable this setting, all features in the Windows Explorer that allow
you to use your CD writer are removed.

If you disable or do not configure this setting, users are able to use the
Windows Explorer CD burning features.

Note: This setting does not prevent users from using third-party
applications to create or modify CDs using a CD writer.]]
