Thanks Carey, but niether of those links have helped, and
I've spent countless hours on the phone with vendors and
have gotten nowhere.

Microsoft refuses to help me (unless I pay for fee based
support of course) simply because the Windows XP licenses
contain the letters 'OEM'. They insist that I go to the
laptop manufacturer or the wireless manufacturer for
support. I called Toshiba and Netgear, and just as I
expected, this idea was laughable - what can Toshiba or
Netgear do to fix a Microsoft patch that isn't working?

There is something wrong with the Q815485 patch, and I
have gone days now without assistance. I am reaching the
end of my rope here - If Microsoft cannot respond to this
problem then perhaps my organization can no longer be
their customer.

Call Microsoft and ask them to waive the fee.

Carey:

I have tried this as you suggested and my request was
denied. Someone at Microsoft needs to respond and fix
this, lest I be forced to switch all of my systems to Red
Hat...

-Len

It will cost you far more than $35 to switch to an off-brand O/S
and all the compatible software programs you'll need.

Len, I have the same issue that you have and continue to search for an answer. I have even upgraded to Windows XP Pro SP2 but continue to have the same problem (no wpa option). Maybe you have a point, Linux is a solid option and is not an "off-brand O/S" as others would like for you to believe; after all it does have a greater installation base in the server (where the real money is) than other "name brand" full of security issues O/S's.

Len,

what type of laptop do you have? IBM recommends on their site to remove the said patch and disable Zero Wireless Service on Windows and use the vendor application to manage wireless networks.

I had the same problem but updated my laptop driver and turned of Zero Wireless Config Service and used the Intel config software and worked fine.

I also installed Linksys adapters that work like a charm and become intermitten when the Zero Wireless Configuration is enabled. There is also a WPA registry hack that is recommended:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EAPOL\Parameters\General\Global]
"AuthMode"=dword:00000002

Let me know how it goes.

The G-man
