WPA and temporary hardware changes

If I add or remove some hardware which triggers reactivation, will
replacing the original hardware prevent the need for reactivation, or
would I have to backup XP before changes are made?

Once a sufficient number of hardware changes has triggered the need to
activate, you cannot "untrigger" the requirement.
