Worksheet for Wife's Work--Help needed

R

The wife works for a tax-exempt organization that is looking to recoup the
sales tax they pay on fuel.
In it's ultimate wisdom, the state has made this as difficult as possible,
requiring TEO's to first find
the price per gallon in a chart and them subtracting their calculated sales
tax per gallon based on
the rate for that particular county. The state's chart looks something like
this:

Sales Tax Rate | Sales tax per gallon
202.7-203.9 15.3

I'm assuming they mean a price of $2.027-2.039 qualifies for a recovery of
$0.153 per gallon.

She presently has something that looks like so:

gallons | total fuel purchase | price per gallon |

She needs to add the tax recovery per gallon to that header to finish this
puppy up.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there is any way to make a lookup chart and
transfer all of the state
figures into it, and then have the column with the actual price per gallon
paid go to that chart and
lookup and insert that figure into another column to complete the
calculation process?

Don't know the first thing about lookups and if ranges are even permitted,
but if you can explain
it like you would to a 12-year old she or I might be able to figure it out.

Thanks

Hi!

When you say: "The state's chart looks something like
this:"

Is this a spreadsheet computer file, a text file, or is it
a printed sheet of paper?

If it's a computer text file then you can copy/paste it
into your file. Then you would have to parse it out into a
useable format for a lookup formula. If it's a spreadsheet
file it would still need to be parsed into a useable
format but that's not to hard (sometimes!)

If it's a printed sheet of paper, UGH!

Post back with more detail. I'll be glad to help.

Hi Biff,
Unfortunately it is a sheet of paper meaning it will need to
be inputted. It's the state Biff--even if they had the
technology they would not know how to use it, lol.

After working on this for a while, I was able to get the
lookup to work for a single entry, but when I try to paste
and copy that lookup down, it returns the same number every.
So I guess I'm not using lookup properly.
