M Altherr

I have Windows XP Home Edition. My word processing
software is Microsoft Works. When I save my documents as
Word, they are saved in Wordpad which has limited word
processing abilities. I dislike Wordpad.

I have created a brochure using a Works template. I want
to email it to the copy shop which has requested it in
Word. When I save the Works brochure in Word, it looses
all its columns. What can I do?

Unfortunately you will likely have to change applications to MS Word.
Conversion from one format to another often causes formatting losses.

The fisrt thing I would do is ask the copy shop if they can simply import it
from Works format, which they probably can with no extra effort on their
part. If they decline to do that, see if you don't have a friend that can
import it for you using Word.

If all else fails, feel free to send your Works format brochure to
chatjunkmail at san dot rr dot com, I'll do the conversion and mail it back
to you as a ZIP file.

In Works, do a Menu: File/Save As and pick the Word DOC format.

This will work fine, although if you have complex or unconventional
formatting in Works no telling how it will come out in Word on the
receiving end.

Despite your assertion, Wordpad does not have it's own data format.
Wordpad is just a freebie program that can format fonts and paragraphs.
It's default read/write file format is RTF. However, it can also handle
Word DOC files. Perhaps you can view the DOC file you create (above)
in Wordpad to get a *clue* about how it will look in Word.

Finally, download from Microsoft's downlaod web site the free Word DOC
Viewer program. Using that program you can view the DOC file you create
from Works to ensure it's going to be ok at the copy shop.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
